Middleton Beach

The Fleurieu learn-to-surf beach

A long, gently-shelving sand beach between Port Elliot and Goolwa, widely regarded as the best learn-to-surf beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Long sand, gentle waves

Middleton Beach stretches for several kilometres between Port Elliot and Goolwa and is the most popular learner surf beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The break sits over a long sand bottom (rather than reef), producing forgiving, consistent waves that are ideal for people learning to surf or returning to the water.

Surf schools

Surf & Sun and other local surf schools run group lessons at the western end of the beach throughout the summer, with boards and wetsuits provided. Lessons are popular with families and school groups.

The break

Experienced surfers know Middleton as Goolwa-Middleton, or simply Middleton Point. The main break is a long left-hander that can hold a decent size on a south swell, but the beach has peaks along its length so there is room for everyone. Offshore winds are from the northeast.

Facilities

  • Grassed foreshore, picnic tables and barbecues
  • Free parking at the Middleton end of the beach
  • Middleton Tavern and cafes across the road
  • The Cockle Train runs along the back of the beach - a great way to arrive
